Optimization of orthopedic treatment of low income persons in the Republic of Bashkortostan: the value of quality of life assessment
Dental defects are the most common diseases of dentition. Needs in the orthopedic treatment in the elderly is 97 %. We aimed to explore the prevalence of secondary adentia in low income elders in the republic of Bashkortostan and to assess the stomatological quality of life (QoL) in patients with different dental defects before and after orthopedic treatment.
Complex stomatological examination was conducted among 296 low income patients (86 % females) of 58 years and older. All patients filled in the questionnaire OHIP-14 twice – before and 6 months after orthopedic treatment. Prevalence of secondary partial adentia was 55%, secondary total adentia – 45 %.
Conducted orthopedic treatment improved the quality of life for 27 %; improved pronunciation of words and the perception of taste, increased work activity. The most pronounced improving was registered for psychological disorders. It must be considering that low income elders with dental defects in Bashkortostan are needed in further stomatological and social inquiry and appropriate orthopedic treatment with preferential terms.
