Symptom assessment in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer may be of value for comprehensive evaluation of treatment effect as well as for monitoring of patients during treatment course in a real clinical practice. Aim of this study was to develop the Russian version of MDASI-GI questionnaire for symptom assessment in patients with GI cancer in research and in the real clinical practice. The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory for gastrointestinal cancer (MDASI-GI) is a site-specific MDASI module. Along with the core MDASI’s 13 symptom items?and 6 interference items, the MDASI-GI also assesses 5 symptoms specific to gastrointestinal cancer. In accordance with international guidelines, the new language version of the tool may be used in research and clinical practice after cross cultural adaptation, linguistic validation and psychometric testing. This paper presents the results of cross cultural adaptation and linguistic validation of the Russian version of MDASI-GI. The following steps of linguistic and cultural adaptation of MDASI-GI for Russia were conducted after the permission from the author of MDASI-GI was obtained: forward translation with creation of two forward translations of MDASI-GI in Russian, reconciliation and expert evaluation of translations of MDASI-GI in Russian and creation of the preliminary version of MDASI-GI in Russian, back translation, harmonization, creation of the test-version of MDASI-GI in Russian, cognitive debriefing, final expert evaluation and development of the final version of MDASI-GI in Russian. Satisfactory face validity of the Russian test-version of MDASI-GI was shown: face validity indices were high?and varied from 1.0 to 0.8. Also, the appropriate content validity of the tool was shown. As the result of translation, cross cultural adaptation and linguistic validation, the Russian version of MDASI-GI for the use in patients with GI cancer in Russia was developed. The Russian version of MDASI-GI may be used in research studies and clinical practice after testing its psychometric properties.
