Comparative assessment of quality of life in patients after laparoscopic and open interventions for large intestine tumors

The analysis of results of surgical treatment of large intestine cancer patients was conducted using quality of life assessment. There was compared quality of life in patients, who have been operated using laparoscopic (I group, n=52) and open (II group, N=46) interventions in 1998-2003 yrs. Healthy people were used as controls (n-36).
Quality of life assessment was provided using SF-36 questionnaire at different time-points: before treatment, in 708 days after operation, in 1-3-6 months and in 1-3 years after operation.
Patients with large intestine tumors exhibited impaired quality of life as compared with controls. In early post operational period predominant improvement of quality of life parameters related to psychological scales took place whereas in late period after operation physical functioning improved to a larger extent.
In 7-8 days after operation quality of life parameters were higher in the group with laparoscopic resection. Further improvement of quality of life parameters was similar in both groups.
